Evanston Roundhouse Park by D.I.R.T.
Evanston, Wyoming
Conceptual Site Design and Planning Study, 1998.
Clients + Collaborators: James Davis, Evanston Urban Renewal Agency; T. Allan Comp, historian; Elaine Carmichael, economic planner.
Union Pacific Railroad engines and railcars pulled off the east-west line in Evanston for repair. Today the abandoned Roundhouse remains amidst twenty-four acres of tumbleweed, rail lines and rail stock fragments adjacent to the downtown Heritage District.
This vital western town, within driving distance from Salt Lake City and Park City Utah, sought to integrate this derelict tract into their commercial and civic realms. The design study revealed the need for strategic redevelopment by private companies to be balanced with a public landscape reclaimed for the community and visitors. (sublinhado por nós)
Roundhouse Square, Turntable Terrace and the Railroad History Boneyard are interwoven with a new wing of the Civic Center and new businesses along Main Street. This extension of the Heritage District expands upon the interpretation of site history within a wild and wooly territory marked by the sweeping scale of tracks and the expanse of the western sky.
